The Brook Dried Up
1 Kin 17:7 And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
Leonard Revenhill use to say, "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord...and so are his stops." It is true and Elijah is an excellent example of it. Some of us are slow to move. We get too comfortable too quick and stick and stay too long.
Sometimes God gives us a simple nudge of the Spirit to get up and get out. When this happens, he always has purpose and reason for it, although we may not understand at the moment. So here is the prophet of God, who has come to the end of his paradise vacation with an empty brook and a full heart. God says, "Get up, son, there is more work to do.
"Arise, get the to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there; behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee." So Elijah the man of God was not only to have his own life preserved but became to means of God's provision for others.
Imagine the scene. Elijah makes his way to the gate of the city and there is a woman gathering sticks. He calls to her and asked that she please bring him some water. She respoonded with apparent kindness and while she was going for the water, Elijah asked her to also being him a piece of bread in her hand.
She could have said to him, "Sir, I have my own troubles and am not able to help you at this time." She didn't have enough to make a cake for her and her son, much less to make a cake for the man who was a stranger to her. Her need was great, her hope was low, but her heart was still willing. She believed that she and her son were soon to have their last meal. BUT GOD!
Remember there was a great drough in the land. Elijah first spoke to her fear - God had spoken to her heart. She invited the prophet into her house and they did eat many days. She must have been absolutely astounded that so little could go so far. That's God's way. So afterwards she had no lack of meal and oil. THINK ABOUT IT!
BLESSINGS!
