Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

A WONDERFUL COUNSELLOR

It is generally agreed that the terms Wonderful and Counsellor go together indicating the value and virtue of this born child and given son. We shall follow that understanding.

Let us first understand the responsibility of a counselor is to guide and advise. It is far too easy for a counselor to merely sit and listen with an occasional “uh huh”. We are told in Scripture that there is wisdom in the counsel of the godly. If the counselee merely wants someone to listen, then he or she should not go for counsel.

Think of it this way – when you hire an attorney, he is to counsel you regarding the law and represent you as if he/she were you. It is why most attorneys will say, “Let me do the talking for you” in court or before the judge. He/she knows the law. It is the same with any area of counsel – having someone to guide your thinking and advise you when your thinking may not be just right. Anyone can listen, but it takes great skill and wisdom to guide and advise.

In JESUS, we have a wonderful marvelous and miraculous Guide and Advisor, for not only does he accomplish this by His Holy Spirit within us, but also as our Advocate before the Father. She advises us and guides us here and represents us there. By the way, He has never lost a case:)

Psychology and Psychiatry are abstract sciences but the counsel of this Wonderful Counselor provides absolute solutions, not mere coping. He will never betray you, never confuse you, never mislead you, never take advantage of you, and He will never leave or forsake you. You don’t have to worry about Jesus putting on a show in court and going out later to dine with the devil. No one has Him in their pocket for He cannot be bought off with bribes or caught off guard because of incompetence. He will always listen carefully and compassionately. His advice is sound and His guidance is always good.

It is said that only a fool defends himself, which is all the more reason to have the BEST counsel possible. So whether it is to guide you, guard you, advise you, represent you, or merely listen to you, JESUS is the ONE and His work is always “pro-bono”.
