Luke 1:14-17Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
These verses are absolutely packed with wonderful truths.
In the first place, and in the light of what we have previously discussed, prayers that may seem unanswered in the past may just be part of a brighter future. Part of this PROMISE was God's response to prayer many years before. Keep your heart ripe and when the time is right - GOD! Hallelujah!
Wouldn't you like to know from the voice of an angel that your child would be greatly used of God. This child who came "late" for you came "just in time" for God, and will be greatly used of Him. In fact, Jesus said of him there had not been a man born of woman greater than John. He was born six months before Jesus. He was the last of the Old Testament prophets.
But think about this: God says, John will be spiritual, separated, and be great in God's sight. What a promise to a Jewish woman who had been barren for so long.
But think about what he would be used of God to do: "And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
Not only was he used to turn hearts vertically, but also horizonically. God is a relational God and when we are right vertically, we get right horizonally. Relationship are important to God, especially family ones.
His name means "God is gracious", and what better evidence of that than this miracle of birth.
By the way, there might even be a miracle awaiting you today as a result of a prayer of long ago. Be patient! Be faithful!
BLESSINGS!
