Meditations in Psalm 119 regarding the Hebrew alphabet sub-titles of this psalm.
ZAIN
49 Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.
50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.
51 The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law.
52 I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself.
53 Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.
54 Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
55 I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law.
56 This I had, because I kept thy precepts.
My mother had so many cute sayings. I have no idea where she got them, but she could find one for every occasion. When she would forget what she had gotten up to do, she would say, “I guess I had better go sit down again to jog my memory.” Jokingly, she would say that proves the memory is in the seat. It’s funny but sometimes it works!
I am always forgetting where I laid my glasses or cell phone. Once I lost my glasses for about five weeks, then one day I moved a chair not often used and there they were. Sometimes I have to call my cell phone from the house phone just to find it.
There is one thing I never forget and that is the Word of God! It is amazing how hiding His Word in our hearts works. Mother died of Alzheimer’s disease. When she did not even know her children’s names, we could begin quoting a verse of Scripture and she would join in by quoting it with us.
The psalmist says, “Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope through it.” This is not to remind God of what He has said, but an expression of our desire that He will help us to remember it. It is like God saying to Adam, “Adam, where art thou?” God knew where Adam was, but Adam did not.
We need a solace in suffering and sorrow. We need a comrade in the conflict. We need a word of hope in our warfare against hell. We need an ally in adversity. God’s Word brings it, for it reminds us of the promises of God to us. The proud may provoke us, but God’s promises always preserve and protect us.
The comfort comes from being comforted by His Word and then enables us to comfort others with the comfort wherewith we ourselves have been comforted. Pride only makes one calloused, but the promises of God enable one to conquer.
Winds of anger and hurt seek to take control when one is injured, insulted, or inflicted, BUT a Word from God enables us to rise above our feelings and thinking to a nobler and loftier height. “I’m pressing on the upward way; new heights I’m gaining everyday” – because of the precious promises that resist the pride and offer grace to the humble.
If we are not singing, we are sighing. If we are not praising, we are pouting. BUT if we are believing and behaving, we can continue shouting and singing the song of victory. Hmm! Are we singing the blues or singing songs of the blessed throughout this earthly life. Whatever might happen in the “day” I continue to meditate on your Word day and night because Your Name reveals Your Nature and YOU are the One and Only self-existent One. Take hope my soul.
BLESSINGS!
