As we move toward Christmas, we continue to consider the events that led to the Incarnation. We realize that Jesus was probably not born on December 25th, but in the scheme of things the importance is not the day we celebrate but the event itself – God was made flesh and dwelt among us.
The last few days we have looked at the Background of the birth of John the Baptist. We continue now with THE BIRTH –
Each day this week we shall follow the outline below.
Birth Lk 1:57-80
The Delivery “a son”
God never prophesies what He doesn’t perform. It doesn’t matter how difficult impossible it may seem. We don’t have to “figure it our,” just believe it.
Not only should we see the miracle in John’s birth to a woman who was well up in age, but we must see the message in it.
My wife became pregnant with our first son three months after we married, so he was born one year after we married. But she was young then; she is older now. The oldest woman in modern history to have a baby is 69 years of age. The point is that she (wife) became pregnant during the turbulent ‘60s, when there were many deaths and burnings and lootings over the racial issue.
Someone asked this young preacher why we would want a baby in times like those. To which I answered and would still answer, “Throughout the course of human history God has used one man or woman to change things. Maybe my son or daughter would be one of those kinds of leaders for God.
The message in this pregnancy is that God would use this child, given to an elderly couple, to prepare the way of the Lord. John would, according to the plan of God, would be a preacher. Being a preacher is a noble calling and according to Paul, we are “separated” from our mother’s womb to do it. There is certainly nothing wrong with education, but if your bones don’t cry out to preach, don’t do it. It is not merely a “calling”, it is a “commission”, and God does not change His mind about it.
It doesn’t mean we are served by everybody; it means we serve everybody with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And today, as never before since John, we had better be preparing the way for the coming AGAIN of the Lord. Our message, as was his, a message of repentance and faith. That’s always been the message of the man of God.
Get ready! Jesus is coming soon!
One more thing: You may be a minister and not a preacher, but if you are a preacher, PREACH THE WORD and don't dilly dally around with everything else. The servant is worthy of his hire. Blessed are the feet of those who preach the gospel.
BLESSINGS!
