Psalm 119:1-8
Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD. 2Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. 3They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways. 4Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently. 5O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes! 6Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments. 7I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments. 8I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.
There are twenty two letters in the Hebrew alphabet and this Psalm uses all of them in sections. Today we shall look at the first section represented by the first letter “aleph”.
The first verse speaks of a path of life which the believer has chosen that God has prescribed which is joyful because it is full, complete, and unblemished. It is life based upon God’s instructions. Think about this carefully.
What honestly brings to a true believer in Jesus Christ real happiness? It begins with the choice to follow Him through His death and into His resurrection, to the “joy” that was set before Him because He endured the cross.
This is an amazing truth! Disobedient children are never happy children. They become angry, resentful, spiteful, hateful, and vengeful - if they continue that path. That is not God’s way. One is NEVER “happy” who does not walk the way God has prescribed.
The second verse teaches us that by our desire to whole heartedly follow Him, we actually witness for ourselves the witness that His Word is true. It is an amazing truth that is in contrast to the world’s path. The world says “show me and I will believe” but God says “Believe me and I will show you”.
Verse three indicates choosing this joyful path of life means NO rebellion – no iniquity. Submission is the key. There are no rebels in God’s favor and fellowship.
Verse four says that we are to carefully hedge ourselves about with His governing principles.
Verse five shows the Psalmist’s desire to maintain, preserve, and keep the appointed and prescribed ordinances (indicating inspections) of God. The expression “People do not do what you expect; they do what you inspect” is the idea here. It is why we are not left to ourselves.
Verse six tells us how we can live an unashamed life; one that is free from shame both on earth and when we face our God. It was the driving desire of the apostle Paul that he NOT be ashamed. It should be ours too and we follow His path.
Verse seven – Who would not extol, exalt, and excitedly praise HIM with a pure conscience and righteous life, learning that His verdicts are always right. When the Lord say this is bad for you, we do not argue – it is bad. Likewise, when He says this is good for you, we then delight in it. He is never wrong; always right.
Verse eight - His commitment to this one is to be ALWAYS present and to be always present and in partnership.
THIS is the walk of wholeness, worship, worthiness, and walking with God. May we be found this day following Him wholeheartedly and joyfully.
BLESSINGS!
