Psalms 34:8 (KJV)
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusted in him.
Last night, with surgery on Thursday in mind, I bought a couple of “reduced to sell” Angus rib eye steaks. Then I mixed about a half dozen liquids and dry seasoning, and marinated them for a couple of hours. I could hardly wait for my wife to come home so we could enjoy them together with a baked potato and green beans. It was absolutely wonderful! It looked good, smelled good, and tasted good. It reminded me of this text.
The first part of the verse includes an invitation, the second an exclamation and the third a qualification. We are invited to experience God for ourselves, He is WHO He is, because He is, and not because I think He is or because someone says He is. Experiencing who He is for myself is completely dependent upon my willingness to experience Him. What He has accomplished and made available can only be appreciated for what it really is, by trusting Him who has done it, provided it, prepared it, and presented it to us.
No steak, no matter how well prepared is appealing to a person that is full. How often have we all experienced someone’s refusal to take a bite, just because they were not hungry? No matter how tasty a food is, it is only desired by the hungry.
The word taste is an interesting word. The Scripture said he tasted death for every man. It does not mean He merely saw it, sniffed it, or sampled it – HE DEVOURED IT! He DIED so that we might not have to die – “He that liveth and believeth (trusts in, relies upon, abandons oneself to) IN me will NEVER die. I am now alive with the very life of God and the life of God is eternal.
I trust Him not to give me a stone when I ask for a fish, and by tasting the fish because I trust Him, I learn for myself just how good God is. Just as one may fill up on junk food and refuse to experience substantial sustenance, one may dabble is church, Bible study, “fellowship” with other Christians, and never taste for himself.
TASTE FOR YOURSELF and see that the Lord is good!
BLESSINGS!
