There is old Negro spiritual that says, "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child."
There is a text in Esther that reads, For how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred? Est 8:6
In Paul's letter to the Romans, he poses a problem that only our position in Christ can solve. Basically he says that a man (or woman) is under the law of God so long as he lives, and that death and death alone can absolve the relationship. It is a metaphorical way of saying that you and I have no way of conquering sin in our lives so long as we live. We are desperate and doomed. That was precisely the position of the Jews of Esther's day, for the law had been decreed and declared and could not be broken nor rescinded.
But, as in the case of the fleshy human, so it was in the case of faithless Haman. Death came and with death came newness of life for the people of God in Mordecai. That is how we are delivered from the power of sin - by death and new life that follows. THAT is what Passion Week shows us. Jesus died! Jesus rose! There is no resurrection without death - not for the Jews, Christ, nor the Church. It is true positionally and must become true practically in our lives.
Christ countered Law by completing it, not by destroying it! He completed it by nailing it to the tree. The law of sin and death is countered by the law of the Spirit of Life IN Christ Jesus! From law to liberty; From fear to faith; From trying to trusting; From death to life everlasting. Hallelujah!
I will continue and clarify all this this week - right now there is a storm outside.
