Resolutions! The New Year is upon us and many of us are thinking about New Year Resolutions. We resolve to exercise more, lose weight, gain weight, stop something, start something, go somewhere, or whatever, but many will find themselves makin' em for breakin' em.
Let's think about Paul's resolve and resolve likewise. "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this ONE THING I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I PRESS toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."
Think of it this way, "I am on a journey in my life that will bring me to my final destination one day. So whatever the past brought, good or bad, success or failure, disappointment or delight, there is nothing I can do to change any of it, but I WILL do this: STRETCH myself toward the future with singlemindedness to do ONE THING, and that is to PLEASE my LORD!"
So, with the same spouse, the same job, the same house, the same body, the same, the same, the same...ONE thing will be different for me - MY ATTITUDE! For to please HIM, I must worry about nothing and pray about everything, keep the main thing the main thing, love as never before, learn as never before, and live as never before.
THAT IS MY RESOLVE! Not a bad one huh? Well, it cost Paul his life, but he stuck to it and it gained him the pleasure of God Himself. AMEN.
PRAYER: Oh God, may it be so for all of us who name your Name. Teach us to stop condoning sin, criticizing saints, and confusing sinners about YOU by our lack of faithfulness and focus, compassion and consistency. In the words of Audrey Myer, "I long so much to feel the touch of your consuming fire, CONSUME me O God, THAT'S MY DESIRE."
