Consider with me for the next few days "Abraham's Altars". We will look at the subject in a way that you might find helpful for teaching and preaching as well as personal meditation.
Let's begin by understanding the meaning of the word.
1. The Definition – “to slay, to kill, to sacrifice by death” - our journey with God begins with death that leads to resurrection. Dead to sin, but alive unto God.
2. The Design - any structure of earth (Exo_20:24) or unwrought stone (Exo_20:25) on which sacrifices were offered. There isan "altar of the heart where we present ourselves a "living sacrifice".
But what is the Purpose of the altar?
An altar was erected for Worship. It is:
1. A Place of Submission- We must be willing
2. A Place of Sacrifice - We must be worshipping
3. A Place of Supplication - We must be wanting new life that comes only through death
Who is this man building this altar?
1. A Descendant of Noah’s son, Shem -
2. The Son of Terah - with whom we find idolatry
3. A native of Iraq (Ur of Chaldees) - from which
4. The Tower of Babel became the Babylon of Iraq
5. Surrounded by Idolatry
Why do we find this man Abram building an altar?
This is The Altar of Grace: The place of Seperation
Gen 12:8 And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east, of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he built an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.
1. He Changed His Direction “he removed from thence”
2. He Confirmed His Devotion “he built an altar”
3. He Called Upon His Deity “called upon the … Lord”
We shall put meat on these bones over the weekend. This is all I have time for now.
PRAYER: Precious Father, help us to understand that through death alone comes life. You have accomplished this for us positionally, and we are to appropriately practically. It IS our standing, may it also be our state. Grant it for Jesus sake.
