I don't usually promote products for Bible Study, but if one is interested in an inexpensive (less than $40) Bible Study program, I would suggest that you check out "Glo Bible" and "YouVersion" (free). The two sync with lots of visuals and audio. Just a suggestion for those who are media minded and maybe not so academically skilled in Bible Study. I use Logos and WordSearchBible usually, but these are a bit more scholarly and much more expensive.
My last blog dealt with where to have new Christians begin. Let me continue by saying that Bible Study booklets and course and wonderful tools, but it has always been my person conviction to get Christians INTO the WORD itself. I realize that there are so many helps today, but when one can learn to study the Scripture as if the Scripture were all one has to study, we become more dependent upon THE TEACHER, THE HOLY SPIRIT, to guide into all truth, which Jesus said He would do.
I suppose my personal experience is the basis of my conviction, because when I came to faith in Jesus Christ at the age of twenty five, I was in a liberal arts college with nothing except my Bible. In addition to my class load, I would spend 6-7 hours a day just reading my Bible. My heart was as a sponge and I learned early that I could trust the Holy Spirit to teach me when I had no one interfering with denominational bias and doctrinal prejudice.
There is no question that God gifts men and women to teach and I do not minimize that, but we MUST learn to dig for the "pearls of truth" for ourselves. There are many tools and techniques for the study of Scripture, many levels of study, but there is NO GREATER TEACHER than the Holy Spirit of God.
After suggesting First John for beginning, I suggest Philippians, Ephesians, Colossians, and Galatians. Get established in Paul teachings, Johns (except Revelation, the Gospels, then Peter's befor going into the Old Testament, after all, we are NEW TESTAMENT CHRISTIANS and should be well grounded in the New before plunging into the Old.
I hope these the reader finds these things helpful. Too many are plunged into Genesis and are stopped dead in their tracks by the time they wade through Deuteronomy, Numbers, and Leviticus. One feeds babies milk for a time before they can eat solid food.
BLESSINGS!
