Luke 6:12 "And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God."
It gets close in closets. When there is no one but you and God, it can get particularly close. We can't con Him, and we can't skirt issues with Him. He knows the thoughts and intents of our hearts - no one else does. Have you ever been with someone that made you very uncomfortable because you felt they could see right through you? Sometimes the one in the closet that makes you most uncomfortable is you. It makes you want to find new territory fast. But if you know HE knows, and you have nothing to hide, but can openly and honestly share your heart and life, it can be such a pleasure. Jesus continued in prayer - all night. He found His closet on the mountain.
Have you ever noticed that regardless of how little time you spend with some people it is too much, but with others the more time you spend just leaves you wanting more time with them.
Sometimes in church we have "prayer meetings". Everyone is invited to pray as they wish and for whom they wish. More often than not it is a time of dead silence, until finally the one who is asked to close in prayer prays. I understand that praying aloud can be hypocritical if on only wishes to be heard, but there are times if you open your eyes you can see "pray-ers" looking at their watches.
I remember asking a minister friend to have prayer with me. He said, "you pray", I don't have the time." Honest to God how many of us get restless when someon prays "too long" in our opinion? How many of us have prayer all night? How many of us do indeed find a place of solitude on a regular basis, just to be alone with the Lord. It's not merely a matter of talking to Him but listening to Him also.
I'm afraid that if there is a single sin that dominates us in today's church, it is the sin of prayerlessness. We are always needing more time, which we don't need at all. We simply need to make time for Him so that we learn to make better use of the remaining time we have.
John Wesley use to rise very early and pray for hours. He is said that the more he had to do that day, the more time he spent in prayer that morning. Hmmm, we might want to try that. It may cure many of our ills and give more time for the things we must do. Wesley didn't spend his time in a bass boat or on a golf course either. What you do best is what you do most.
Maybe you aren't near a mountain, but for sure you do have a closet.
BLESSINGS!
