Small Towns
Mark 1:38 (GW)
38 Jesus said to them, “Let's go somewhere else, to the small towns that are nearby. I have to spread {the Good News} in them also. This is why I have come.”
I’m so glad I am from a small town. Most everybody knew everybody else. The streets were safe for the children to play in them. When you spoke to someone they spoke and usually smiled. There was no violence, no hatred, no harm, and no danger. That is how it was there in those days. The greatest need then and now is for everybody to know Jesus.
As a young boy I used to ride horses with the Chief of Police. The governor was from my home town, the mayor was a dear friend. Teachers worked hard by they cared about students and if necessary would send them to the coach for a paddling. I don’t remember ever hating a coach for paddling me, but I do remember always respecting them and all adults.
I’m so glad Jesus was concerned about small towns and villages where perhaps most of the people were decent and respectful folks who cared for each other and were always willing to help one another. Most were “God fearing” people who closed their stores on Sundays and often listened to a preacher who would preach in the park on Saturdays.
I’m thankful to have live where somebody loved enough to tell others about Jesus and can still do it today. I remember praying in public school, having a Bible reading, and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.
There were no TVs in every home that kept kids inside and away from the outdoors. In the winter we wrapped up and played in the cold. In the summer, we would swim in the creeks, springs, and lakes. The small town was a safe and secure place for all.
But Jesus cared enough about the small town to want to go to them and share with them the Gospel, and I’m glad He did. Thank God for small towns and THANK GOD FOR JESUS AND THE DIFFERENCE HE MADE IN THEM THEN.
Blessings!
