[Ex 15:23] And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.
THE WATER
Moses was certainly not unfamiliar with this wilderness are for it was here that he tended sheep for the previous 40 years of his life. It was here, after having been trained for the first 40 years to become a sovereign that he learned what it meant to be a shepherd. Had he drunk from this water in those previous years? Was it once fresh water that had become stagnant and bitter?
Jesus said, “The water that I shall give you shall be in you a well of water springing up unto life everlasting.” Life was easy for Moses as in his childhood and youth, when it seemed he was in the prime of his life with everything going his way. But a single death had changed everything for him. He who was to be sovereign over Egypt one day killed a fellow Egyptian who was fighting with a Hebrew.
Moses knew something of the bitter water of life that comes from man’s own wisdom, knowledge, and ability and he had discovered it all to be futile and fruitless. Here he was now at the mercy of God leading to children of Israel through this wilderness with the murmuring and complaining of the chosen people of God.
The water is bitter and the people are angry and thirsty and many believed they would have been better off to stay as slaves in Egypt. How sad! When life becomes a cold rainy day, we must remember that the SON stills shines in our hearts. Never forget that regardless of the appearance of things, HE is over all things and loves us beyond our comprehension.
As we shall soon see in the Song of Moses, God has the solution to the problem facing all these wandering people. And he also has the solution for whatever is troubling you and me. We may not see it yet, but HE sees and knows all. Look up! Your redemption drawth nigh.
BLESSINGS!
