Phil 4:8 (KJV)
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Compare: Philippians 4:8e: 1 Pet 2:9; 2 Pet 1:3, 5
Of good report (εὔφημα)
Only here in the New Testament. Lit., sounding well. The kindred verb is commonly used in an active sense. Hence not well spoken of, but fairspeaking, and so winning, gracious (Rev., in margin).
Word Studies in the New Testament.
It is difficult for me to think of "good report" without thinking of the spies sent out to spy the land of Canaan after the first wilderness wanderings. Two of the twelve brought back a "good report". Two of twelve is not a good percent but it pretty much runs consistent in the Lord's work.
It is rarely the majority that says "We can do it." It is usually 15-18 percent who works, gives, and believes that "we can do it." That is pretty pathetic! But it does stand true to form.
So few really believe that where God guides, God provides. It must break the heart of God to see how faithless His children are. We depend upon banks and begging for funds to get the work done, but when God had His way with Israel; Moses had to say, "That's enough".
What can we honestly believe God for? Isn't it true that God is no man's debtor? Does He not own the cattle on a thousand hills and the hills too? Why can we not trust God to pay in advance? Churches across America are mortgaged to the hilt, because some preacher led them into debt, not deliverance.
It's just not true with money and material things; it is also true with everything God has entrusted us to manage. The "good report" is not merely "we can do it", but "we can do it by the grace of God, and we trust His leading".
So here is the "good report" for today: "Call unto me and I will answer you and show you (not you will show me) great and mighty things which you know not". "I will open the heavens and pour out blessings upon you." "Pressed down and overflowing" is God's promise to those who give...starting with the heart.
BLESSINGS!
