Genesis 17:1 (HCSB)
1 When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him, saying, “I am God Almighty. Live in My presence and be blameless.
Isaiah 13:6 (HCSB)
6 Wail! For the day of the Lord is near. It will come like destruction from the Almighty.
2 Corinthians 6:18 (HCSB)
18 I will be a Father to you, and you will be sons and daughters to Me, says the Lord Almighty.
Revelation 1:8 (HCSB)
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “the One who is, who was, and who is coming, the Almighty.”
Revelation 21:22 (HCSB)
22 I did not see a sanctuary in it, because the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its sanctuary.
From Genesis through Revelation God declares Himself as the ALMIGHTY - Consider:
We throw language around without thinking about what we say. For example, a wife says to her husband, "You always come home late." He responds by saying, "I do not, I was home Monday before you were." Focus on the word always. We use is to mean sometimes, at times, occasionally, frequently, but rarely always. The prefix means without exception. There is a word used in reference to God 48 times in the OT, and frequently in the NT. It is the word Almighty, and this week I want us to gain a greater appreciation of what it really means.
Mighty are the forces at work in this world. There are men with mighty minds, great thinkers who invent and design. There are men with mighty bodies who excel in every are of athletics, who lift and leap and lunge their way into the record books. Our attention had recently been upon the retirement of Michael Jordan, a man who excelled in Basketball.
There are men with mighty influence who govern and guide whole nations. In every area of life there are the mighty.
There are also mighty invisible forces at work in this world who seek to control the souls of men. Evil forces they are, led by the god of this world, the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that works in the children of disobedience. It is they who constantly cause strife, division, and conflict on all levels of human existence (even in churches, among Christians).
Certainly we know about mighty things such as bombs, drugs, and guns. Just to mention a few. The might of man and his inventions are indeed a marvel to man, but they do not impress Almighty God. He alone is Almighty - all powerful and all sufficient, and we would do well to listen.
When we as humans fall into the trap of comparing ourselves with ourselves though, we can appear to be so strong, so smart, so superior. But that is a foolish thing to do. The Bible says that when we do it we become vain in our imaginations. When we thus gain a clearer comprehension of the Almightiness of God, we are compelled to acknowledge the inadequacy of man. The puniness of man is seen by the power of God.
I want us to observe several things regarding the Almighty God, that I sincerely believe will be an great encouragement to you. We will see that as the Almighty God, He is absolutely supreme in His Power over creation, circumstances, criticism, and comfort, just to mention a few. The Apostle Paul asked, "If God be for us, who can be against us?"
We will continue tomorrow -
BLESSINGS!
