This week I would like to spend time looking at what I call my BIBLE STUDY BUDDY. I use to teach World History and I used a similar approach. It will work well for you if you work it. But first let me ask a couple of questions:
1. How much do you know about the geography of the Bible?
2. How much do you know about the peoples of the Bible?
We (even preachers) know so little of the Word of God. Many Christians have a hard time finding a certain Bible book because we have discarded Bible Sword Drills for children for some reason.
In any event, lets consider some of the things that are important to good Bible study this week. Today I will simply list them and in the next few days illustrate them.
What do we know about -
1. The Periods of the Bible - some call them Epochs, some Stages, some Dispensations.
2. The People of the Bible - The customs and cultures of the Jews and those nations we often stumble over in pronounciation.
3. The Progress of the Bible - It is a progressive revelation. For example God protected Cain after he killed Abel, but later demanded that whoever sheds man's blood, by man was his blood to be shed. It also answers questions such as "Where did Cain get his wife".
4. The Places of the Bible - Where was Eden, Jacob's wells, the plains of Mamre, etc.
5. The Problems of the Bible - Here we uncover the cause and effect relationships. This happened, that caused it, and here is the result or consequence.
6. The Penmen of the Bible - Who wrote this? What was he like? How did his character influence this writing?
7. The Patterns of the Bible - Here we study scenarios that give us insight into life.
8. The Principles of the Bible - principles are governing laws that do not change.
9. There are a few others that I use regarding, Promises, Potentials, Patterns, Pictures, etc.
We often miss the flow of real life in Bible study. We must maintain balance in rightly dividing the Word of Truth. I fear that too often we simply impart data that merely feeds the head and not the heart, but if we approach the Bible with wisdom, then we get understanding.
I pray what I share will be useful to you and that you will perhaps adopt a Bible Study Buddy of your own.
Blessings!
