Luke 19:10 (KJV)
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
The verse is an amazing one filled with answers to important questions – Consider:
WHO – The Son of man is the Subject and an amazing one at that. It is used of Luke in reference to the Perfect Man who “knew no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth.” This is the One who stood before Pilate and heard the words, “I find no fault in this Man”. This is the One who, on the cross said to His own mother, “Behold, the Man”. This is He of whom Peter spoke when he said, “…Jesus of Nazareth, a Man approved of God…”.
If you want to know what a real man is like, look at HIM, listen to HIM, learn of HIM, who was in every sense of the word a MAN. He wept, He loved, He showed compassion, He felt, He saw, and He spoke – what a SUBJECT!
WHAT – “is come” – that is the simple verb, but oh what an action this verb conveys. I, along with 5 others left the comfort of a home with a soft bed to travel to India where I slept on a thin mat on a marble floor. So what? There are millions who do that every day. But This Man left the portals of glory to come to a planet of grief. This Man who knew no sin, CAME so that He could become for me what I always knew - sin, so that I could go to Him as one who is what I never was – righteous. He CAME because He cared!
WHY – “to seek and to save” – He came looking for those of Adam’s race who are hiding from God, not knowing where they are. He came for those who are confused, critical, and condemned, although they don’t even know they are sometimes. He came seeking the extortionist such as Madoff, who destroyed so many lives and fortunes, the prostitute such as fill the streets desperate to make a living, the politician who has lost his ability to be rational and who has no clue how those of us who live on social security live, and for the terrorist who is so blinded by his cause he cannot feel compassion. He came to look for them who are hiding behind position or poverty; behind name or namelessness; behind friend or foe; behind spouse or sibling; behind loneliness, licentiousness, loss and lust. BUT – He did not come without a purpose – to seek and to SAVE.
WHAT – “that which was lost” – Although we usually think of “being lost” in spiritual terms (which is appropriate), there are those who are lost from their families and who are not sure they could ever find their way home. There are spouses who are lost in a relationship they are not sure they should stay in. There are children who are lost in a world that is robbing them of common sense, purity, and purpose. There are preachers who are lost in their mission and ministry to the extent that they no longer see truth as simple, sure, and settled. Oh, Dear God, there is a nation which has lost its way, a neighbor who lost his or her job, a nobody who lost identity. There are so many in the same condition, but under different circumstances and in different countries. LOST! LOST! LOST! And He came to seek and to save them (us).
PRAYER: Thank you Father for caring so much.
