Solomon's life is divided into three parts in 1 Kings 1-11. The first four chapters revolve around his coronation. Chapters 5-8 revolve around his construction, and chapters 9-11 deal with his corruption and collapse. BUT there is comething pretty amazing about chapter 10, for there we have the account of Solomon as a type of Christ, and the Queen of Sheba as a type of the unbeliever who comes to Christ.
Read chapter 10 of First Kings and follow the outline:
I. She Came: She had heard of the wealth, wisdom, and wonders of Solomon, but she came in unbelief of what she had heard. vs 1 "she heard about the fame...and the Name of the Lord." Solomons fame was associated with the NAME of the LORD. She came with hard questions.
There are several things that come to my mind regarding this:
1. Should not God's hand upon our lives and His presence within us cause people with "hard questions" about life to come to us?
2. Is this not what was true about America at one time? We were a Christian nation, a city set on a hill whose light was seen around the world as a beacon of hope and help. We WERE sending money and missionaries to reach the world for CHRIST, not just the Amercian church.
3. We allowed so called theologians like the Emory profession to declare that "God is dead." After WWII "higher criticism" (another term for theological corruption) to infiltrate our ranks. We embraced the social gospel, black theology, and began to question the authority and authenticity of the Word of God. We moved away from understanding what is abominable to God. AND when that which is abominable becomes toleratle, it soon becomes acceptable, then fashionable. Jesus said, "that which is esteemed among men is abominable to God." We have sacrificed conviction for convenience, complacancy, and compromise.
Pray tell, who comes to us with hard questions anymore? We have lost our wisdom and are losing our wealth and are rapidly moving toward worthlessness. The salt has (for the nation) lost its savor and is being trodden under foot. We can learn alot about ourselves if we will by this chapter in First Kings, as we see Solomon's fame and fortune change to futility and failure.
Stay with me on this!
PRAYER: Have mercy O God! Have mercy on our nation! Have mercy and cause this dark hour in our nation's history to bring us back to being that city set upon a hill. O dear God, how we have turned so far from You. If it is best that we be chastened, then chasten us, but remember mercy. If these days can bring us to a great revival in these last days, then by your sovereign will do it. We will recived from your hand feast or famine, but we are resolved to receive which ever in faith. God help us!
