The church had an old well and pump right in the front with a mason jar always full of water beside the pump. As a child I remember being corrected by my father once for picking up that mason jar and drinking the water. Dad said, "Son, that is not for drinking, but for priming the pump." I shall never forget the experience.
It seems that most Christians I know want to drink from the mason jar instead of priming the pump themselves for the gushing fresh water of the well. Dad said, "Don't waste the water, son. If you draw water from the well, drink it and refill the jar for someone else."
What a spiritual lesson! Too many of us want to drink what someone else has pumped. Not too much; just a little, where there is no effort on our part because someone else has done the work, and all the time the cool, fresh, clear water from the well goes untouched.
PRAYER: Precious Father, as the hart pants after the waterbrook, so pants my soul after thee. Help me to remember that there is no limit to the water of life, but I must prime the pump or settle for the little someone else pumped into a mason jar. I hunger for you O Lord!
