NAHUM
Chapters 1-3
We know little of this Prophet, but there is a tomb near Mosul which is believed to be the place of his burial. The Assyrians had cleaned house and taken practically the whole of the Northern Kingdom into captivity, but God is jealous for His people for He had made an unconditional covenant with Abraham. God does not break His Covenant.
Nineveh was at the zenith of influence and prosperity after it had repented in response to the preaching of Jonah, but as happens so often prosperity often comes at the expense of purity and spiritual power, so the test says, “God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious; the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies” (1:2).
The Decree 1:1-15
The Description 2:1-13
The Doom 3:1-19
Why is it so difficult for us to understand that “He who puts his hands to the plough and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God”. Looking back, Lot’s wife became a pillar of salt. The Nineveh, who had found grace in the eyes of the Lord, also found His great displeasure.
The lesson for us is a simple one for a city, a community, a country or a citizen: “Be thou faithful unto death...” The Thessalonians turned FROM idols to SERVE the true and living God... We must do the same or suffer the consequences.
BLESSINGS!
